Project Grace was founded in 2007 by Catherine Bowen Stern and Carole Mahoney, two mothers from Northern California. Inspired by the documentary film, Motherland, which explored grief and loss in another culture, Project Grace is dedicated to providing a unique and transforming option for persons suffering from the loss of a child. While initially chartered to serve grieving mothers, the program has expanded to include fathers, siblings, and other family members in grief. At least two trips are offered each year: one designed exclusively for mothers grieving the loss of a child, and one "open" trip for anyone -- mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, spouses, friends – wishing to honor a loved one through service.
Project Grace seeks to create a safe and supportive environment where grieving individuals come together to share, volunteer, and explore. Project Grace was named in honor of Grace Caldwell Magill 1989 - 2005.
